PAC-03-A-214-A 03 SEP 03 (ASSIST) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request for assistance from the AK State Troopers (AST) in Kotzebue (OTZ), to search for two overdue boaters near the Noatak River. OTZ CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, which located the overdue boaters and directed a rescue boat to their location. The boater’s motor had broken down, so the rescue boat assisted them back to OTZ. OTZ CAP flew one sortie for 2.3 hours. Two assists awarded.
PAC-03-A-215-S 04 SEP 03 (SAR) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT 30 miles SE of Selawik. Kotzebue (OTZ) CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, however they were unable to locate the source of the ELT, which subsequently ceased transmissions. OTZ CAP flew two sorties for 2.6 hours. No credits awarded.
PAC-03-A-219-S 06 SEP 03 (SAR) ANCHORAGE CAP & AK STATE TROOPERS
Mission opened in response to FAA and aircraft reports of a downed aircraft near Trading Bay. An aircraft overhead the crash site reported two ambulatory survivors waving their arms. Anchorage (ANC) CAP was tasked and responded by diverting a search aircraft from a training flight. The CAP aircraft arrived on-scene and reported several good helicopter landing zones nearby. The AK State Troopers (AST) were then tasked and responded with an
AS-350B3 helicopter, however the survivors made contact with the CAP aircrew and stated they were declining rescue assistance. The survivors were uninjured, and had already arranged for a friend to pick them up. ANC CAP flew one sortie for 3.4 hours, and the AST
AS-350B3 flew one sortie for 0.3 hours. Two assists awarded.
PAC-03-A-223-S 08 SEP 03 (SAR) ANCHORAGE CAP & 210TH RQS
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT approximately 86 nm NNW of Anchorage (ANC). ANC CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft. While the CAP aircraft was en route to the search area, FAA reported an overdue aircraft in the same area. The 210th RQS was then tasked and responded with an HC-130 and an HH-60 helicopter. The ANC CAP aircraft located the crashed aircraft approximately 80 nm NNW of ANC and directed the 210th RQS aircraft on-scene. The two survivors were then taken to AK Regional Hospital in ANC. The 210th RQS HC-130 flew one sortie for 2.2 hours and their HH-60 flew two sorties for 2.8 hours. ANC CAP flew one sortie for 3.0 hours. Two saves awarded.
PAC-03-A-224-A 11 SEP 03 (ASSIST) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request for assistance from the AK State Troopers to search for two overdue hunters. The hunters were to be picked up by a hunting guide and they were not at the pick up location. Kotzebue (OTZ) CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, however the hunters were located and recovered by the guide service, while the CAP aircraft was en route. OTZ CAP flew one sortie for 3.7 hours. Two located awarded.
PAC-03-A-226-S 12 SEP 03 (SAR) BIRCHWOOD CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT 10 miles east of Palmer. Birchwood (BCV) CAP was tasked and responded with a ground search team, which located and silenced the non-distress ELT in a moored floatplane at Anderson Lake. The BCV CAP ground team searched for 0.7 hours, and claimed no expenses. No credits awarded.
PAC-03-A-229-S 17 SEP 03 (SAR) ANCHORAGE CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT and aircraft reports of an ELT near Birchwood. Anchorage (ANC) CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, which located and secured the non-distress ELT in a hangared aircraft, at Birchwood Airport. ANC CAP flew one sortie for 2.0 hours. One located awarded.
PAC-03-A-230-S 18 SEP 03 (SAR) FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT located 30 miles SW of Circle Hot Springs. Fairbanks (FAI) CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, which located the non-distress ELT onboard a civilian helicopter parked near the confluence of Frying Pan Creek and Birch Creek. The helicopter’s pilot secured the ELT, which ceased shortly thereafter. FAI CAP flew one sortie for 2.0 hours. No credits awarded.
PAC-03-A-231-S 22 SEP 03 (SAR) FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT seven miles SE of Delta Junction. Fairbanks (FAI) CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, but were unable to locate the source of the ELT, which subsequently ceased. FAI CAP flew two sorties for 5.5 hours. No credits awarded.
PAC-03-A-232-S 22 SEP 03 (SAR) ANCHORAGE CAP & KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT near the Harding Ice Field. Kenai (ENA) CAP was tasked and diverted a search aircraft from a training flight to investigate. The ENA CAP aircraft was unable to locate the source of the ELT, which subsequently ceased. An associated SARSAT ELT report subsequently developed near Anchorage (ANC). ANC CAP was tasked and responded with a ground search team, however once the ground team arrived on scene the ELT ceased. ENA CAP flew one sortie for 2.6 hours. The ANC CAP ground team searched for one hour and claimed no expenses. No credits awarded.
PAC-03-A-233-S 25 SEP 03 (SAR) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request for assistance from the AK State Troopers (AST) in Kotzebue (OTZ) to search for two overdue boaters, last seen traveling to Noorvik. OTZ CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft, which located the non-distress boaters while they were waiting for weather to improve. OTZ CAP flew one sortie for 0.7 hours. PAC-03-A-234-S 26 SEP 03 (SAR) ANCHORAGE CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT reports of an ELT in Ptarmigan Pass. Anchorage (ANC) CAP was tasked, however the ELT ceased prior to the CAP aircraft’s departure. Given the remote location of the ELT, 11RCC had the ANC CAP aircraft search the area for any signs of distress. The CAP aircrew located an aircraft, which had crashed and burned near a small airstrip. The lone uninjured pilot requested that a friend be called to fly out and pick him up. The CAP aircraft returned to ANC and arrangements were made for the crashed pilot’s recovery. ANC CAP flew one sortie for 2.8 hours. One assist awarded.
PAC-03-A-235-A 27 SEP 03 (ASSIST) VALDEZ CAP
Mission opened in response to a request for assistance from Juneau (JNU) RCC (USCG d17) to search for an ELT at Valdez (VDZ). A USCG HH-60J helicopter had localized the ELT signal to the VDZ airport. VDZ CAP was tasked and responded with a two-member ground search team, however they were unable to pick up any ELT signals. JNU RCC released VDZ CAP from the search, and the mission was closed. The VDZ CAP ground team searched for 1.0 hours and claimed no expenses. No credits awarded.
