99-0088 01 May 99 (CG Assist) Juneau CAP
Mission opened in response to a request from the Coast Guard RCC in Juneau to assist in a search for an overdue aircraft. An ALNOT had been issued for a Cessna 170 flying a round robin between Yakutat and Haines. The Juneau CAP was tasked and responded with a search aircraft. They did a thorough search of the area but had to RTB due to low fuel and deteriorating weather. On their way out of the search area, they met up with USCG and civilian helicopters heading into the search area. Both helicopters came upon the crash site at the same time although from opposite sides of the pass. The aircraft was overturned on a glacier, the pilot standing nearby. The Juneau CAP flew 1 sortie 2.7 hours. 1 ASSIST was awarded.

Mission opened in response to a request from the Alaska State Troopers to search for an overdue snowmobiler. The Kotzebue CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. They searched extensively without success. Later that evening, a ground party located the overdue, uninjured but very tired. The Kotzebue CAP flew 1 sortie for 3.0 hours. 1 ASSIST was awarded.

They did a thorough search of the area but found no signs of distress. Having no other leads, RCC Juneau suspended the search effort and CAP assistance was no longer required. The Juneau CAP flew 4 sorties for 13.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report near Cape Yakatage. A second SARSAT report showed the ELT near Valdez. The Valdez CAP was tasked and deployed a ground team. They searched the area without success. They then launched an aircraft to search. The aircraft tracked the ELT to the boat harbor in the Orca Inlet near Cordova. The Cordova Harbormaster continue to search for the errant signal. The errant EPIRB was located on a fishing vessel, non-distress, and silenced. Three missed passes were received. The Valdez CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.7 hours. The ground team searched for 1.0 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a request from the Alaska State Troopers to assist in the search for an overdue hiker in the vicinity of Granite Tors near Fairbanks. The Fairbanks CAP, the 210th RQS and the 68th MEDDET were tasked and launched search aircraft. The overdue was in good condition, with minor dehydration. She declined further medical attention or assistance and was released. Fairbanks CAP flew 1 sortie for 5.0 hours. The 210th RQS flew 1 sortie for 2.3 hours. The 68th MEDDET flew 2 sorties for 4.1 hours. 1 ASSIST was awarded.

99-0112 22 May 99 (NPS Assist) 210th RQS / Anchorage CAP
Mission opened in response to a request from the National Park Service to assist in the recovery and medevac of an injured climber who had fallen into a nearly inaccessible crevasse on Thunder Mountain in the Denali Park. The 210th RQS was tasked and responded. They provided the HC-130 as a communications platform, the HH-60 for the medevac and shuttles between the base camp and Talkeetna and also PJs for the rescue party. The 206 Combat Communications Squadron and the Anchorage CAP also volunteered their services for this mission. After weather and technical delays, the LAMA (NPS helo) airlifted the climber to safety. The rescue party provided instant medical attention and then Lifeguard took the injured climber to Providence Hospital in Anchorage. The ground teams stayed in the SAR area for the duration of the mission. The 210th RQS flew a total of 8 sorties for 23.7 hours. 1 SAVE was awarded.
99-0113 31 May 99 (AST Assist) Kotzebue CAP / Nome CAP / NSB
Mission opened in response to a request from the Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue to assist in a search for 2 overdue snowmobilers. They had been on a daylong seal-hunting trip between Cape Krusentern and Cape Espenberg and did not return. The Kotzebue and Nome CAP units were tasked as well as North Slope Borough. All provided search aircraft. They did a thorough search of the area but found no signs of distress. Having no other leads, AST suspended the search effort and assistance was no longer needed. The CAP flew a total of 6 sorties for 16.9 hours. NSB flew 3 sorties for 9.3 hours. No SAVES of ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a report of an overdue aircraft by one of the pilot’s co-workers. The pilot planned a round trip from Campbell Lake to Pt Possession to pick up friends at a cabin but he never showed up. The CAP was initially tasked to search the route. When no signs of the pilot or aircraft were found, a more detailed search began. Six days later, the over due was located on the shoe at Chickaloon Flats, deceased. The 210th RQS flew a total of 10 sorties for 10.8 hours. The CAP flew a total of 66 sorties for 92.2 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
