MSN 090 3 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the vicinity of Anderson Lake Airstrip. Polaris CAP launched an aircraft and also a ground team. The ELT was located on the airstrip non-distress and was silenced. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.6 hours. The ground team searched for 2.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 092 5 May 98 (CS ASSIST) JUNEAU CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Coast Guard for assistance in searching for an EPIRB in the Juneau area. Juneau CAP tracked the signal down to a fishing vessel in Juneau Harbor, non-distress. The Coast Guard silenced the EPIRB. Juneau CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.1 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 093 5 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Anchorage area. A Polaris CAP ground team located the ELT in a Supercub in a hangar on O’Malley strip, non-distress. The ELT was silenced. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. The Polaris CAP ground team searched for 1.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 094 6 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report and numerous aircraft reports of an ELT in the Anchorage area. A Polaris CAP ground team located two separate non-distress ELT’s in moored floatplanes at Lake Hood. The ELT’s were silenced. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. The Polaris CAP ground team searched for 5.0 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 096 6 May 98 (CG ASSIST) JUNEAU CAP
Mission opened in response to a request from the Coast Guard RCC in Juneau. A USCG helo crew needed mission essential equipment to continue a search for a missing boater. Juneau CAP was tasked and launched an aircraft to transport the equipment. Juneau CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.2 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 097 8 May 98 (AST ASSIST) NOME CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers to assist in the search for an overdue boat in the Nome-Sledge Island area. Just prior to Nome CAP launching, the overdue boat was located by a plane chartered by AST. No hours or sorties were flown by Nome CAP. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 098 9 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report and numerous aircraft reports of an ELT in the Big Lake area. Polaris CAP diverted an aircraft which had been on a training mission. The aircraft localized the ELT to the Hilltop Airstrip. Polaris CAP then sent out a ground team. The ELT was located non-distress in a parked aircraft and deactivated. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.1 hours. The ground team searched for 1.0 hour and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 099 11 May 98 (AST ASSIST) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers to assist in the search for an overdue snowmobiler in the Kotzebue area. The individual was located near Nimiuk Point, non-distress. He had run out of gas. Kotzebue CAP flew 3 sorties for 4.0 hours. 1 ASSIST was awarded.
MSN 100 12 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report and a report from Merrill Tower of an ELT. A ground team comprised of Polaris CAP cadets searched for the ELT and located it in a hangar. The ELT was silenced. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. The Polaris CAP ground team searched for 0.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS wee awarded.
MSN 102 13 May 98 (AST ASSIST) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers for the Kotzebue CAP to assist in a search for 2 overdue snowmobilers that were traveling from Kotzebue to Deering. They had been missing for 24 hours. During the search, it was discovered that the snowmobilers had arrived at Deering. Kotzebue Cap flew 2 sorties for 2.0 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 103 13 May 98 (SIGHTING) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a report of an aircraft sighting wreckage. The pilot was unable to determine if the wreckage was either old or new. Kotzebue CAP investigated and found that it was old wreckage. Kotzebue CAP flew 2 sorties for 3.7 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 107 15 May 98 (SEARCH) NOME CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report, an ELT report from Nome FSS and an ALNOT from Anchorage Center. The on-scene commander was personnel from the Nome Fire Department and organized ground search parties on snowmobiles. Nome CAP was the liaison between 11 RCC and on-scene personnel. Coordinates from the SARSAT system were relayed to the ground teams and were critical in locating the crashed aircraft. All the people on board survived the crash and were taken to the Nome Hospital. Three missed passes were received and thei mission was closed. The Nome CAP ground team searched for 0.5 hours and claimed no expenses. 10 SAVES were awarded.
MSN 108 15 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report and other reports of a dual frequency ELT in the Anchorage area. After unsuccessful searches on both Elmendorf AFB and Kulis ANGB, Polaris CAP sent a ground team to search. The ELT was located in an ERA Aviation helo at Anchorage International Airport. The ELT was silenced. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. The Polaris CAP ground team searched for 3.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 109 16 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Missino opened in response to a report from Kenai FSS and Anchorage Center of someone broadcasting a MAYDAY call, possibly in the Wasilla area. Polaris CAP searched the most probably areas. Based on the leads received, no evidence was found of an aircraft in distress. There was no ELT activity for that time period. All leads were checked and no new leads had developed. The FSS people feel that the broadcast may have been a hoax. Polaris CAP flew 2 sorties for 6.4 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 110 16 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP, BIRCHWOOD CAP and 210th RQS
Mission opened in response to an ALNOT. CAP and the 210th RQS searched for the overdue aircraft. The aircraft departed Big Lake for Petersburg on 15 May. The HC-130 located the aircraft at the 8600 ft level on the Knik Glacier. The helo lowered 2 PJ’s down on the hoist and confirmed 2 deceased. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 3.5 hours. Birchwood CAP flew 1 sortie for 2.7 hours. 210th RQS flew 2 sorties for 6.1 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to an aircraft report of an ELT near the Birchwood Airfield. A Birchwood CAP ground team located the ELT in a vehicle, non-distress. The ELT was silenced. The Birchwood CAP ground team searched for 0.4hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report near Eagle. Tok CAP located the ELT, non-distress, in an aircraft parked on a small airstrip northeast of Eagle. The ELT silenced. Three missed passes were received. Tok CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.9 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 115 19 May 98 (SEARCH) USCG, HOMER CAP, KODIAK CAP, SEWARD CAP and VALDEZ CAP
Mission opened in response to an ALNOT for an overdue aircraft en route from Cordova to Kodiak. CAP ground teams performed field checks with negative results. Juneau RCC received a composite SARSAT plotting out at the north end of Afognak Island, which was on the overdue aircraft’s route of flight. A USCG helo was tasked to investigate. The helo locagted the overdue aircraft’s wreckage and recovered the pilot. USCG flew 1 sortie for 0.7 hours. The Homer CAP ground team searched for 0.5 hours. The Seward CAP ground team searched for 1.0 hour. The Kodiak CAP ground team searched for 0.5 hours. The Valdez CAP ground team searched for 0.7 hours. None of the ground teams claimed any expenses. 1 SAVE was awarded to USCG Kodiak.
MSN 116 19 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to numerous aircraft and FAA reports of an ELT in the Anchorage area. Polaris CAP diverted an aircraft which had been on a training mission. The aircraft localized the ELT to Lake Hood. Polaris CAP then sent out a ground team. The ELT was located non-distress in a parked aircraft and silenced. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.7 hours. The ground team searched for 2.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to an ALNOT. Polaris CAP launched one aircraft to search for the overdue aircraft. They located the aircraft non-distress on an airstrip at the mouth of the Big Sue on the west side. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.2 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 124 25 May 98 (AST ASSIST) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers for the Kotzebue CAP to assist in a search for 2 overdue hunters last seen heading towards Cemetery Hills and Devil’s Lake. While the Kotzebue CAP was searching, the 2 hunters self-recovered and had not been in distress. Kotzebue CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.5 hour. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 126 26 May 98 (SEARCH) HOMER CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Homer CAP area. A Homer CAP search aircraft localized the ELT to the commercial side of the harbor. Homer CAP and USCG then sent out ground teams to continue the search. The ELT was located non-distress on a fishing vessel and silenced. Homer CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.7 hours. The ground team searched for 1.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Anchorage area. A Polaris CAP ground team located the ELT, non-distress, in an apartment. The owner was notified and the ELT silenced. The Polaris CAP ground team searched for 4.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 131 29 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Wasilla area. Polaris CAP launched a search aircraft but they were unable to hear the ELT. Three missed passes were received and Polaris returned to Merrill Field. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.6 hours. No SAVE or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 133 30 May 98 (SEARCH) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report 35nm north of Kotzebue. Kotzebue CAP was tasked and launched search aircraft. RCC then received notifications from Kotzebue AST that one of their aircraft had not checked in. The had been practicing wheel landing in the area of the ELT composite. At that point, AAOF #1 was tasked to assist. Kotzebue CAP located the aircraft overturned in a river AAOF #1 recovered 2 survivors and transported them to Kotzebue where they were then taken by ambulance to Kotzebue Hospital. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. Kotzebue CAP flew 1 sortie 3.6 hours. AAOF #1 flew 1 sortie for 3.6 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 134 30 May 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the vicinity of Beluga Strip. Polaris CAP was tasked to conduct an aerial search. While orbiting overhead, a pilot came out to check the ELT. The ELT was located and silenced. This information was passed on to the CAP aircraft and he returned to Merrill Airfield. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.6 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.
MSN 135 30 May 98 (AST ASSIST) BETHEL CAP and AAOF #2
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers for assistance in locating an overdue hiker in the Bethel area. Bethel CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft which located the overdue individual. AAOF #2 was then tasked to pick up the individual and transport him to Bethel. Bethel CAP flew 2 sorties for 2.9 hours and AAOF #2 flew 1 sortie for 0.8 hours. 1 SAVE was awarded.
