MSN 175 1 Jul 98 (CG ASSIST) KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Coast Guard for assistance in locating a boat with an inoperative engine near Deep Creek. Kenai CAP was tasked to search. Kenai CAP located the vessel for the Coast Guard, who would later send a rescue boat to assist. Kenai CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.9 hours. 2 ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 176 1 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP and 210th RQS
Mission opened in response to a call from a downed aircraft requesting assistance. A Champion 7GCB-46 called Polaris CAP via a cell phone to report that they crashed 3nm northeast of Barabara Lake. The Polaris CAP and the 210th RQS were tasked. Polaris CAP pinpointed the location of the downed aircraft and the 210th RQS transported the survivors to Alaska Regional Hospital. Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 2.8 hours. The 210th RQS flew 2 sorties for 0.8 hours. 2 ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 178 1 Jul 98 (CG ASSIST) KODIAK CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Coast Guard for assistance in searching for an ELT signal in Kodiak. Kodiak CAP was tasked and sent a ground team to search. Kodiak CAP located the EPIRB, non-distress, in a local residence. Kodiak CAP searched for 1.3 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 179 2 Jul 98 (CG ASSIST) KODIAK CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Coast Guard for assistance in searching for four overdue boaters. They were last seen traveling from Whale Island to Raspberry Island near Kodiak. Kodiak CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. Kodiak CAP was unable to locate any signs of the boat. The Coast Guard suspended the search effort Kodiak CAP was released. Kodiak CAP flew 1 sortie for 2.3 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 180 3 Jul 98 (SEARCH) KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Kenai area. The Kenai CAP was tasked and deployed a ground team to search. The ELT was located, non-distress, at Johnson Field. The ELT was secured and three missed passes were received. The Kenai CAP searched for 0.5hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 182 4 Jul 98 (SEARCH) HOMER CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Homer area. The Homer CAP was tasked and sent a ground team to search. They located the ELT, non-distress, in an aircraft parked at Homer-Beluga Lake Seaplane water strip. The ELT ceased and three missed passes were received. Homer CAP searched for 3.0 hours and claimed $25.00 in expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 183 6 Jul 98 (SEARCH) KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Soldotna area. The Kenai CAP was tasked and deployed both a search aircraft and a ground team. The aircraft located the source of the ELT and directed the ground team to the area. The ELT was located in an aircraft parked on a grass field., non-distress. The ELT was secured and three missed passes were received. The Kenai CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.5 hours. The ground team searched for 1.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 185 6 Jul 98 (SEARCH) FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report near Manley Hot Springs. The Fairbanks CAP was tasked and launched a searched aircraft. Shortly after the Fairbanks CAP was airborne, RCC was notified that the ELT had been found and the owner silenced it. Fairbanks CAP returned to base. Upon approach to Fairbanks International, they heard another ELT which they located and silenced. Three missed passes were received for the original ELT; a composite message was never received for the second. Fairbanks CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.6 hours and searched 1.1 hours on the ground. No expenses were claimed for the ground search. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 186 7 Jul 98 (SEARCH) FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Fairbanks area. The Fairbanks CAP searched for this ELT, but was unable to pick up a signal or locate the ELT. While they were searching, three missed passes were received. The search was terminated and the mission was closed. The Fairbanks CAP searched for 1.5 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 189 8 Jul 98 (CG ASSIST) JUNEAU CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Coast Guard for assistance in searching for an individual reportedly floating in Steven’s Passage. The Juneau CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. The aircraft did not see and indications of the individual. The Coast Guard suspended the search effort and Juneau CAP was released. Juneau CAP flew 1 sortie for 3.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 190 9 Jul 98 (SEARCH) NSB and FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to composite SARSAT reports in the Brooks Range. The North Slope Borough SAR was tasked and launched a search aircraft. The NSB SAR confirmed that there was an ELT signal but had to turn around due to poor weather. Fairbanks CAP was then tasked and launched 2 search aircraft. The ELT was located; the source was a non-distress rafter on the Sheenjek River. The ELT was secured and three missed passes were received. The Fairbanks CAP flew 2 sorties for 1.0 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 191 10 Jul 98 (SEARCH) BIRCHWOOD CAP and 210 RQS
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report and a report of a crashed aircraft in the Lake George area. The Birchwood CAP and the 210th RQS were tasked and launched a search aircraft. Birchwood CAP located the distressed aircraft and directed the 210th RQS to the scene. The survivors were ambulatory and were taken to Valley Hospital. The Birchwood CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.9 hours and the 210th RQS flew 1 sortie for 0.8 hours. 3 ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 192 10 Jul 98 (SEARCH) KING SALMON CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the vicinity of the mouth of the Naknek River. The King Salmon CAP was tasked and deployed a ground search team. They wee unable to locate the EPIRB or detect any signs of distress. Three missed passes were received. The King Salmon CAP searched for 3.0 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 195 11 Jul 98 (SEARCH) FAIRBANKS CAP and ALASKA STATE TROOPERS
Mission opened in response to a SARSAT report and numerous aircraft reports of an ELT 80 miles northeast of Fort Yukon, on the Sheenjek River. The Fairbanks CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft but the aircraft had to return due to poor weather. Alaska State Troopers (AST) was then tasked and launched an IFR equipped aircraft which was able to locate the source of the ELT. It was a non-distress rafter equipped with a mini-PLB (same person as in mission #98-190). Three missed passes were received and the mission closed. The Fairbanks CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.7 hours. AST flew 1 sortie for 3.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 196 11 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT and aircraft reports of an ELT located the Palmer side of Hatcher Pass. The Polaris CAP was tasked and diverted aircraft from a training mission to search. They were unable to hear any ELT signal. RCC was then notified by Alaska State Troopers that there had been an aircraft crash in the area and assistance was already on scene. The Polaris aircraft was released. Three missed passes were received. The Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 197 14 Jul 98 (AST ASSIST) KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to request by the Alaska State Troopers for assistance for an overdue fisherman in the Soldotna area. The Kenai CAP was tasked and deployed search aircraft. After days of searching, they were unable to locate the individual. AST had exhausted all of their leads and suspended the mission. The Kenai CAP flew a total of 9 sorties for 20.4 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 198 12 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Big Lake area. Due to the close proximity of CAP FLT 5035, belonging to the Polaris CAP, RCC diverted them to conduct the search. The search aircraft was unable to pick up the ELT signal. The aircraft was released from the search. Three missed passes were received. The Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.0 hour. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 201 15 Jul 98 (SEARCH) 201 RQS and POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to an ALNOT for an overdue aircraft en route from Palmer to Whittier. The 210th RQS and the Polaris CAP were tasked to search. Shortly after the search had begun, the overdue reported in, non-distress, to Palmer. The ALNOT was cancelled as was the search. The 210th RQS flew 1 sortie for 0.7 hours and Polaris CAP flew 2 sorties for 1.3 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 202 15 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Anchorage area. Due to the close proximity of CAP FLT 5035, belonging to the Polaris CAP, RCC diverted them to conduct the search. The search aircraft was able to localize the ELT signal to Merrill Field. They landed and located the ELT in a parked aircraft, non-distress. The owner was contacted and the ELT silenced. RCC received two missed passes and then another composite. Another ground team went back to the plane but could not hear an ELT. RCC then received three missed passes. The Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.6 hours. The ground team searched for 0.3 hours and claimed no expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 203 16 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Lake Clark Pass area. The Polaris CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. The search aircraft was unable to enter the pass due to poor weather and there were no other assts available. Shortly after, the ELT and three missed passes were received. The Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.7 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 206 18 Jul 98 (SEARCH) FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT and aircraft reports in the Fairbanks area. The Fairbanks CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. They localized the ELT signal to the Fairbanks International Airport. At that time, Airport Security assumed the search. The located the ELT in a parked aircraft, non-distress. The owner was contacted and the ELT silenced. Three missed passes were received. The Fairbanks CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.4 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 207 19 Jul 98 (AST ASSIST) BETHEL CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers for assistance searching for an overdue aircraft. The aircraft was flying from Bethel to Cinnabar Creek. The Bethel CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. The located the destroyed aircraft near the Canyon Creek Airstrip. The Bethel CAP aircraft directed a civilian aircraft into the airstrip which in turn, transported the survivors, all ambulatory, to the Bethel Clinic. The Bethel CAP flew 2 sorties for 5.2 hours. 4 SAVES were awarded.

MSN 209 20 Jul 98 (SEARCH) KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to SARSAT and aircraft reports in the Kenai area. The Kenai CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. They localized the ELT signal to a residence. The signal belonged to an EPIRB and it was silenced by the owner. The Kenai CAP flew 2 sorties for 1.2 hours and the Kenai CAP ground team searched for 2.0 hours and claimed $8.00 in expenses. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 210 21 Jul 98 (AST ASSIST) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers for assistance searching for an overdue boater. The boat was traveling from Kotzebue to Kiana. The Kotzebue CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. They located a body near a boat and returned to Kotzebue to pick up an Alaska State Trooper. The trooper confirmed that eh body belonged to the overdue boater. The CAP did not transport the body. The Kotzebue CAP flew 4 sorties for 4.4 hours. No SAVES of ASSISTS awarded.

MSN 211 21 Jul 98 (SEARCH) BIRCHWOOD CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite ELT report in the Palmer area. The Birchwood CAP was tasked and deployed a ground team. The CAP was unable to pick up the ELT signal. The ELT ceased and three missed passes were received. The Birchwood CAP ground team searched for 0.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 212 21 Jul 98 (CG ASSIST) JUNEAU CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Coast Guard for assistance in searching for a flare sighting. The flare was reported by a civilian who saw it on Admiralty Island near Juneau. The Juneau CAP launched an aircraft but was unable to find any sign of distress in the area. Juneau CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.0 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a composite ELT report in the Bethel area. The Bethel CAP was tasked and launched an aircraft. The CAP was unable to pick up the ELT signal. The ELT ceased and three missed passes were received. The Bethel CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.8 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 214 24 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP and KENAI CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite ELT report in the Kenai area. The Polaris CAP and Kenai CAP were tasked. The Polaris CAP was already airborne and located the ELT on the southeast side of Kenai airport. The Kenai CAP sent a ground team and silenced the ELT. The Polaris CAP flew 2 sorties for 2.6 hours and the Kenai CAP ground team searched for 3.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 215 24 Jul 98 (OTHER) KOTZEBUE CAP and AASF-NOME
Mission opened in response to a report of an aircraft making an emergency landing after an engine failure near Noatak. The Kotzebue CAP was tasked and launched an aircraft which located the distressed aircraft. The pilot and passenger were uninjured but were deep in a bog. The AASF-Nome launched their helo and retrieved the pilot and passenger. The Kotzebue CAP flew 3 sorties for 3.5 hors and the AASF-Nome flew 3 sorties for 4.3 hours. 2 SAVES were awarded.

MSN 217 25 Jul 98 (SEARCH) ARCTURUS CAP
Mission opened in response to an ALNOT for an overdue aircraft en route from Mackey’s Lake to the Kustatan River and back. The Arcturus CAP was tasked to search and located the overdue non-distress. The Arcturus CAP flew 2 sorties for 3.0 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 218 28 Jul 98 (SEARCH) BETHEL CAP and BIRCHWOOD CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite ELT report in the Bethel area. The Bethel CAP and Birchwood CAP were tasked. The Birchwood CAP was tasked to transport2 members of the FCC to Bethel with their DF equipment. Prior to the FCC arrival, the ELT was located in a CAP aircraft. The Bethel CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.6 hours and the ground team searched for 12.5 hours. The Birchwood CAP flew 2 sorties for 5.8 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a composite ELT report in the Willow area. The Birchwood CAP was tasked and deployed a search aircraft. The CAP was unable to pick up the ELT signal. The ELT ceased and three missed passes were received. The Birchwood CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.6 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 221 26 Jul 98 (SIGHTING) 210th RQS, POLARIS CAP and LIFEGUARD
Mission opened in response to a report of a sighting of an airplane crash on Ft. Richardson Army Base. The Polaris CAP launched one aircraft to provide comm-cap over the crash site. Providence Hospital Life Guard was dispatched and arrived on scene. As the 210th was preparing to launch, Providence Life Guard confirmed that the pilot and passenger were deceased. The incident was turned over to the on-scene coroner and the mission terminated. The Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.1 hours and Life Guard flew 1 sortie for 0.4 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to numerous ELT reports in the Anchorage area. The Polaris CAP was tasked and dispatched a ground team. The ground team located the ELT in a parked aircraft at Lake Hood. The ELT was silenced and the mission terminated. The Polaris CAP searched for 0.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to SARSAT and aircraft reports in the Fairbanks area. The Fairbanks CAP was tasked and dispatched a ground team. The ELT was located in a parked aircraft in Fairbanks and silenced. Three missed passes were received and the mission was closed. The Fairbanks CAP ground team searched for 2.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 224 30 Jul 98 (AST ASSIST) FAIRBANKS CAP
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers for assistance in searching for an overdue hiker in the Circle Hot Springs area. A 65 year old female was to meet a friend at the halfway point on the Pinnell Trail, but failed to show up. The Fairbanks CAP was tasked and launched search aircraft. After several days of searching, the Fairbanks CAP located the hiker. An AST helo was directed to her location and picked up the overdue. The Fairbanks CAP flew 8 sorties for 24.7 hours. 1 SAVE was awarded.

MSN 227 29 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP and 210th RQS
Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Anchorage area. The Polaris CAP was tasked and launched a ground team to search. The 210th RQS also diverted from a training mission to search. The ELT was not located and three missed passes were received. The Polaris CAP ground team searched for 5.3 hours. The 210th RQS flew 1 sorite for 1.4 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 229 29 Jul 98 (AST ASSIST) SEWARD CAP and 210th RQS
Mission opened in response to a request by the Alaska State Troopers (AST) concerning a hiker in distress high on Mt. Marathon in Seward. The Seward CAP and the 210th RQS searched for the distressed hiker. On day two of the search the hiker was located on the 4100 foot level of the mountain by the helo. The distressed hiker was hoisted into the helo and transported to Seward where AST took control of the situation. The hiker is a member of the United States Army and is stationed at Ft Wainwright. The Seward CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.6 hours and the 210th RQS flew 4 sorties for 8.4 hours. 1 SAVE was awarded.

MSN 230 29 Jul 98 (SEARCH) POLARIS CAP
Mission opened in response to numerous ELT reports in the Anchorage area. The Polaris CAP was tasked and dispatched a search aircraft. The aircraft narrowed down the search area to Eagle River. And a ground team located the ELT at the land fill and it was silenced. The Polaris CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.2 hours and the ground team searched for 2.5 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

MSN 231 29 Jul 98 (SEARCH) KOTZEBUE CAP
Mission opened in response to a composite ELT report in the Kotzebue area. The Kotzebue CAP dispatched an aircraft. The aircraft tracked down the ELT signal to a radar site under construction. The signal was very weak and before a maintenance person could be contacted the signal ceased. Three missed passes were received. The Kotzebue CAP flew 1 sortie for 1.0 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to a composite SARSAT report in the Wasilla area. The Birchwood CAP was tasked and launched a search aircraft. The ELT was located, non-distress, I a parked aircraft at the new Wasilla Airport. The ELT was silenced and three missed passes were received. The Birchwood CAP flew 1 sortie for 0.7 hours. No SAVES or ASSISTS were awarded.

Mission opened in response to an ELT report in the Farewell area. The Polaris CAP was tasked and dispatched a search aircraft. The CAP aircraft did not locate the ELT or see any signs of distress.
